Sloppy Joe recipes have been kid-approved for many years. Served on a bun in a delicious tomato sauce, you literally make a mess eating them. This recipe for Cafeteria-Style Sloppy Joes is just like the kind you grew up with and got at school. Extra sloppy and extra delicious, you won't rely on the mixes you get in the store after your first bite of these classic sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 celery stick, finely chopped
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large carrot, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons no salt seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon all spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro or parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat the skillet to medium high heat. Add olive oil, celery, onion and carrot and sauté them until slightly caramelized.

  2. Add ground beef, no salt seasoning, all spice, cayenne pepper, cinnamon and oregano. Mix it with the meat and sauté the meat mixing constantly; it will take about 3-4 minutes.

  3. Add tomato sauce, garlic, and cilantro. Fill the cup of tomato sauce with water and add to the sauce. Mix it in, lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

  4. Serve on good toasted buns or on thick toasted Italian white bread.
